How Bayer cut production scheduling time by 75%

In manufacturing, keeping stations staffed with the right employees can make the difference between meeting the production plan…or not.

Before Humanity Schedule, Bayer’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania manufacturing site built its daily production schedule on paper. Coverage gaps were common as supervisors couldn’t see who’d called off or who had a vacation on the books until it was too late. Assemblers were sometimes scheduled on stations they hadn’t trained for – which can be a compliance and safety risk – requiring yet another round of schedule changes.

Preparing a schedule and then having to adjust it, due to someone not showing up because of a call off, and not being notified in an appropriate amount of time, was very frustrating.
Danilo Macasaet, Manufacturing Project Manager, Bayer U.S.

Finding and maintaining appropriate coverage was a constant challenge, staff and supervisors grew frustrated, and operations were too frequently disrupted. To solve their scheduling problem, the site decided to implement Humanity Schedule, a scheduling solution built for the day-to-day demands of a frontline manufacturing workforce.

Part of the daily routine

Now, Bayer Manufacturing Project Manager Danilo Macasaet and his team rely on Humanity Schedule every day to build schedules and manage time off requests. They also use the manager dashboard as a regular communication channel between the production floor and leadership, maintaining visibility into what’s happening on the floor each day.

The payoff: 75% less time on scheduling

Since making Humanity Schedule a core piece of daily operations, the site has cut the time it takes to build the next day’s schedule.

Time savings has been the biggest impact to our site. We've seen about a 75% reduction in the time it takes to set up our next day's production schedule, and that's time we can now put toward solving problems.
Danilo Macasaet, Manufacturing Project Manager, Bayer U.S.

Those savings show up most in what the team does with the reclaimed time and the impact it’s had on operations and productivity. With Humanity Schedule making employee scheduling much more efficient, they can put more attention toward solving production issues on the floor.

Additionally, Humanity Schedule has made leave management easier for employees and supervisors. Staff enjoy using the mobile app to submit their time off requests, and managers can review and approve them quickly without disrupting the schedule.

TCP Support has also played a big part in how well Humanity Schedule works at Bayer, Macasaet says. Working with the TCP team has helped whenever questions come up or an update is on the way, and Macasaet describes the communication as consistently supportive.

Looking ahead

Macasaet says he’d recommend Humanity Schedule to others in the industry and welcomes the chance to connect his team’s TCP point of contact with others exploring it.

“We look forward to continuing our work relationship and to continuing to grow together.”
